Nintendo told us to expect a focus on the upcoming Switch instalment of Smash Bros. – and that’s exactly what we got.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be released on December 7th. Here’s what we learned about the title:

  • Every character to ever appear in a Smash game will be back in Ultimate, at the expense of the number of new characters. “We’re kind of hoping you aren’t expecting too many new challengers” said creator Masahiro Sakurai
  • In addition to the support for classic GameCube controllers via the Wii U’s GameCube adapter, Nintendo teased the release of Smash-branded GameCube controllers to coincide with the game’s launch, with pricing yet to be announced
  • The game will output 1080p 60fps while docked, and 720p 60fps while portable
  • All existing Smash Bros. amiibo are compatible with the game, and amiibo will be released for new challengers Inkling & Ridley
  • Expect quality-of-life tweaks for series veterans, like stage select occuring before character select

If you’re looking for something to play right now, the hero shooter Paladins, battle royale smash hit Fortnite, indie adventure Hollow Knight & the surprisingly compelling mobile game Fallout Shelter are available from the eShop right now.

Nintendo also showed trailers for new third-party & indie titles, showcasing the growing developer support for the Switch:

Killer Queen Black

Hollow Knight

Finally, Square Enix’s upcoming RPG Octopath Traveler has a new demo being released on June 14th, which has added the ability to transfer your progress over to the full game when it launches on July 13th.
