Smash Bros. purists will want to be playing the upcoming Smash Bros. Ultimate on an original GameCube controller or WaveBird – and while adapters are available, those controllers are more than 15 years old now, and often on their last legs.
In addition to the wear and tear, the first-generation of GameCube controllers manufactured before 2004 had an “almost universally undesirable feel and performance for competitive players” according to Mike “Typo” Bassett, who previously modded GameCube controllers for Mute City Customs.
A new run of Smash-branded GameCube controllers for the Switch was announced this week at E3 with no details other than an image, but now Amazon has opened pre-orders, we at least have an idea of the price.
The GameCube controllers are currently available for US$29.99, and the GameCube adapters are currently available for $19.99.
We predict astronomical demand for this new hardware, so with Amazon’s limit of one controller per customer, those of you wanting a full lineup of four will likely need to place another pre-order with your local retailer.
